Bury the bead in the notch for zero, middle is 15 moa and the top is 30.With a 200 yd zero, the bead at the top of the horns is approximately 400 yards for my rifle.
The Pedersoli hunter model Sharps buckhorn on my rifle has a 30 moa window. You will soon be able to approximate the range by how much the target fills the buckhorn window. The only way I know to figure this out is to go out and practice using a specific rifle and target size. That device is the buckhorn sight.It is possible to determine range to an animal using your buckhorn sight as a range finder, provided you know the approximate height of the target.
The idea was simple and observing the sight with its purpose in mind will make its utility obvious.Unless you have some rare capability to judge the range to the animal, it would be convenient to have a sight that eliminates this main factor in making a kill shot from point blank range to the max effective range of your rifle. The front sight should be a flat topped narrow post or blade just narrow enough that you can see a narrow strip of light on each side when it is centered in the notch. I then take a small thin flat file and use the edge to deepen the notch to form a narrow but deep flat sided flat bottomed notch.You have created a Patridge sight, an open sight the way God intended it to be.
